GETTING airborne at 230km/h and annihilating the field on a stage that almost ran past his house was all in a day's work for Jason White as he snatched the lead on day one of Targa Tasmania yesterday.
On a day when most cars stayed on the road, White, of Devonport, flew into the lead with a scintillating run behind with wheel of his $450,000 Lamborghini Gallardo, with his uncle John in the navigators seat.
The White's lead Targa by 13 seconds over defending champion Tony Quinn, of Queensland, in his Nissan GT-R, and then comes Mazda factory driver Brendan Reeves, of Victoria, 25sec off the lead in his RX8 SP. The other Mazda factory entry of Matthew Rickards and Bernie Webb were in the bad books, spearing their RX8 SP into a ditch.
Western Australian husband and wife Steve and Terri Bruce went on a rollercoaster ride through the Tasmanian bush in their previously immaculate 1967 Mini Cooper S.
"Something in the steering broke back up the road and after that we were passengers," Terri said.
Both were shaken but unhurt.
Not even rain late in the day sent competitors into a spin, but it did slow down White's Lamborghini.
He gave back time to Quinn and Reeves on the last two of eight stages, but the highlight of the day was White's jump on a table-top style crest on the Holwell stage.
"We were on the rev-limiter in sixth gear about half a kilometre before the crest doing 260km/h," White said.
"I backed off to about 230km/h and we were airborne well and truly until we cleared the whole thing. The noise that came out of John's mouth indicated that I got it just right.
"Hopefully someone got it on video because it would have looked awesome."
Finishing third on the opening day of the five-day event was a great start for Reeves, given it was only his third time behind the wheel of his RX8.
"It's been good so far, just getting the feeling for the car and not trying to push too hard," Reeves said.
Rex Broadbent's campaign for six consecutive Classic Outright titles is on track, the Victorian grabbing the lead on day one over Queenslanders John Siddons (1970 Datsun 240Z) and Don Todd (1971 Ford Capri Perana). The Showroom class is led by four-times Australian rally champions Simon and Sue Evans, of Victoria, driving a Mazda3 MPS.
Targa Tasmania heads into the state's north east for a loop to St Helens, Longford and return to Launceston today. |
