THE University of Tasmania has lost more than $10 million on the sharemarket this year.

At the end of 2007 the university's investment fund was worth close to $200 million, but the global financial downturn has seen that value drop more than 5 per cent.

"The sub-prime crisis has affected everyone whether they know it or not," university finance director Bernard Lillis said.

"You only have to look at your own super fund, but like a super fund you have to take a five-year view and this is what the university does."

In 2007 the university reaped $14 million from investments, compared with $23 million in 2006.

"The return will be lower than 2006, which was an extraordinarily good year, but it will still be positive," Mr Lillis said.

The university aims for an average 10 per cent a year return on its investments. Its annual report for last year said the possibility of a negative return was about one year in seven.

Vice-chancellor Daryl Le Grew said the university's portfolio had suffered a hit this year to the tune of "at least $10 million".

"I don't think we've lost as much as others have but there's no way you could say it's been a good year," Professor Le Grew said.

Mr Lillis said that, unlike many universities, UTAS did not rely on its investment fund for day-to-day operating expenses.

"Instead, we take a very prudent approach and apply this fund only to strategic investments," he said.

The university said it had not deferred any capital works as a result of the downturn.

Financial analyst Tom Ellison said it was appropriate to have an investment fund for future works.

"They're taking a long-term view with it and in the scheme of things an investment fund will perform better than simply investing in cash and fixed-interest funds, although there will be short-term volatility," Mr Ellison said.

Prof Le Grew said a plan to merge the university's law and business faculties was not a money-saving move as students believed.

"It shouldn't be seen as a threat to anybody, it is not a cost-cutting measure," he said.

Prof Le Grew said about 30 per cent of law graduates worked as barristers and solicitors, while most entered the corporate world.

The university was "keeping the dialogue open" on the plan which would give the law faculty a competitive advantage.
