Bid History
An idea to bring the Olympics to Hobart first started back in 2005 on the then radio show called JAB Schoolies on Edge Radio. Started by Ben Waterworth and Anthony Moran, the then joke was created as an attempt to show Hobartians and Tasmanians that thinking big can sometimes pay off and that the biggest event to bring to the city would be the Olympic Games. Over time the boys continued on with their idea, gaining a cult following amongst their listeners about a potential bid. It was often compared to the fictional bid to bring the Winter Olympics to Smiggins Holes in 2010, started by another comedy duo Roy & HG.

Originally the bid was for the 2016 Olympics, with the boys going as far to create a bid video and logo for the bid, and coming up with the slogan Together, We Can! The logo for the 2016 bid can be seen below:


After several years of joking the boys sat on the idea for a while and concentrated on their newly devolped show The Brink which highlighted Hobart's plight for more events. The Olympic bid soon resurfaced, and was changed to the year 2020 in order to give the city more time to get everything right.

While things continued on as more of a joke, in 2009 a Facebook group was started and it soon gained a massive following, reaching close to 5000 members by the end of the year. The local media soon picked up on the bid and more and more people become involved. A logo competition was held and people started to take things a little more seriously. By the end of 2009 the bid had gone on from being a joke to the real deal. Hobart wanted to bid for the 2020 Olympics.

After a new logo was chosen in 2009, 2010 saw the start of massive things for the bid. Merchandise was produced and became extremely successful straight away, and national media attention was soon on the cards. Further local media attention was also achieved and soon the one thing everyone was talking about in Hobart was the Olympic Bid. And in an election year, things only became bigger.

While the plans are still only at the beggining, lots of exciting developments are happening as we speak so watch this space as we continue to move the bid further and further forward!

Timeline
2005

2010
National media attention is reached. A new Facebook page is created and achieves close to 3000 new followers in less than 3 weeks, out rating other bidding cities for the 2020 Olympics. New members of HOCOG are announced while sponsors soon come flooding to the bid

2011
The official bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games commences, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voting on all applicant cities before deciding which cities become candidate cities for the 2 year evaluation stage

2013
The IOC chooses the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics

2020
The 32nd Summer Olympics are held in the winning city
