A UNIVERSITY student suffered serious head injuries after allegedly being bashed by strangers in North Hobart.
Ryan Brown, 21, suffered a fractured eye socket and serious cuts and bruising after he and a friend were allegedly set upon by three men in the early hours of Saturday, September 26.
Mr Brown and a friend had been to a 21st-birthday barbecue at New Town and were walking on Elizabeth St towards the city to catch a taxi home, when they say they were attacked just after 1am.
They said they walked past men standing near the Commonwealth Bank and when they reached Nandos restaurant they heard footsteps.
"As the footsteps got really heavy, I turned around and I just got hit in the face," Mr Brown said. "I didn't have any time to react."
After the first hit he staggered and a few seconds later he said he took a couple more hits to the head before falling to the ground.
"I was on the ground just trying to protect my head," he said.
His friend tried to help him but got hit and they were both on the ground.
The attackers walked away and the men staggered across the road and sought help from passing police.
Two men were charged at the scene by police and are expected to appear in court soon.
Mr Brown and his friend were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Mr Brown's face was so swollen he struggled to see clearly and needed surgery to repair his shattered eye socket.
The engineering student said he had two alcoholic drinks on the night and did nothing to provoke an attack.
He said he and his twin sister Lindsay were born and raised in Tasmania but had been taunted in the past because of their Asian appearance. Their mum is Indonesian.
Lindsay had a bottle thrown at her once and Asian friends had been pelted with eggs.
"It's really ridiculous. It shouldn't be happening but it does," Mr Brown said.
"I've lived in Tassie my whole life. I consider myself to be Australian.
"I haven't been out since [the alleged bashing] and I probably won't go out for a couple of months.
"I'm actually quite scared to walk past random people in the street now."
