Student safety upgrade

NEW safety measures are being planned at the University of Tasmania.

The move comes amid fears that violence against Tasmania's international students could damage the state's reputation abroad and its international education sector.

The measures, including upgraded on-campus closed-circuit television coverage, come after the murder of 26-year-old Chinese student Zhang "Tina" Yu prompted revelations that racist taunts and attacks were far more common than authorities admit.

The 26-year-old Chinese student's body was found in the Tyenna River near Mt Field National Park in June.

University of Tasmania vice-chancellor Daryl Le Grew has told students more was being done to ensure student safety.

Details were outlined in an email to all students last week.

Among the 1000 students graduating at ceremonies this month, more than 200 are international students.

"Tina's murder ... is a wake-up call for everybody to take a step back and say: 'We thought things were fine [but] maybe they are not.'

"When we look again, we see there are things we can improve," Professor Le Grew said after a graduation ceremony in Hobart yesterday.

"After the murder of Tina, everybody felt very insecure and unsure, not only international students," he said.

Plans to increase security include increased and better co-ordinated patrols by university, police and community agencies.

Phetla Thanthavongsa and Pakeonexay Sithirajvongsa, of Laos, who both graduated with masters in Public Administration (International), said yesterday they had felt safe during their 20-month stay.

Mr Thanthavongsa said international students chose to study in Tasmania because it had a reputation as a safe place.

"The experience has been great and positive for us," he said.

Prof Le Grew said the university would work to ensure the broader community understood the great

value international students brought to Tasmania.

"The financial returns are minor by comparison to the goodwill, networks, relationship and rich cultural benefits that are developed with other parts of the world," he said.
