Tasmanian police say one of two men charged with the murder of a Chinese university student showed them where her body had been dumped in a river.
Police allege Zhang 'Tina' Yu was picked up by two men in the Hobart Suburb of Sandy Bay early on Thursday morning, and killed about three hours later at New Town.
Four people have been charged in connection with the murder.
Two 21-year old-men, Stavros Papadopolous from New Town and Daniel Joseph Williams from Kingston, have been charged with murder.
Two others, 43 John Edward Mollineaux and 18 year old Jazmin Iris Haygarth, both of New Town, are accused of failing to report the killing of a person.
Police will not disclose how Ms Zhang was killed.
Detective Inspector Peter Powell says the 26-year-old's body was found in the Tyenna River.
"One of the men that's been charged actually took police to the location where the body had been left," he said.
"[The] body was found in the Tyenna River which is up through the Mt Field National Park which is obviously some distance away."
"I would suggest if we hadn't been given some assistance in finding the body it would have been very difficult to...find."
The four people charged have been remanded until the 25th of next month.
The Tasmanian Parliament has expressed condolences over Ms Yu's death.
The Liberal Member for Lyons, Rene Hidding, says international students are very highly valued in Tasmania and bring rich cultural benefits.
"It is very important that we send a strong message to international students and their families, that despite this awful news, we do in fact remain resolutely determined to be a safe destination for students, who are setting themselves up for life with a high quality Tasmanian education," he said. |
