POLICE hope security footage from Hobart's streets and nightclubs will help them find missing student Zhang "Tina" Yu.

Detectives yesterday obtained surveillance tapes from locations around the CBD in the hope of tracking the movements of the 26-year-old in the hours before she disappeared last Thursday.
CIB sergeant John Gilbert said police were baffled by Ms Yu's disappearance and hoped to know more today after examining the tapes.

"We want to find her... we're doing as much as we possibly can," he said.

Initial investigations suggested Ms Yu was last seen on Sandy Bay Rd or Harrington St about 2am on Thursday.

But Sgt Gilbert said police had received new information from two male friends of Ms Yu's, who gave her a lift in their car, dropping her off near the Mercure Hotel.

"The last positive sighting was her getting out of a car in Bathurst St opposite the Mercure Hotel at 2.15am," Sgt Gilbert said.

This has prompted police to turn their investigations to cameras around the CBD.

Sgt Gilbert said Ms Yu's two housemates had been handing out flyers calling for people with information about her whereabouts to come forward.

He said police hadn't sanctioned the flyer but "anything to find Ms Yu is beneficial".

Sgt Gilbert said there was nothing to indicate foul play but police had not ruled it out.

He said it was very out of character for Ms Yu, a University of Tasmania student on a student visa, to disappear.

She was last seen wearing a black glittery knee-length sleeveless dress.

She is described as about 155cm tall, with long dark hair and brown eyes.

Sgt Gilbert said Ms Yu could speak English and was regarded as a good student and a pleasant person.

The Chinese Embassy has been notified of her disappearance.

Sgt Gilbert urged the public to contact police with any information.

He also called for Ms Yu to contact authorities if possible.

"She hasn't done anything wrong, we just want to make sure she is OK," he said.

Anyone with information about the missing student can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

• POLICE are concerned for the welfare of a 15-year-old girl missing from Perth in northern Tasmania.

Tasmania Police said Jamie-Lee Pursell was last seen at her home in Perth on Friday.

She is described as 160cm tall with collar-length brown hair. She was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and brown sneakers.
