MYSTERY surrounds how a fishing boat sank off Tasmania's remote southwest coast, killing a father and son from Hobart.

The bodies of Darrel and Mark Howells were left floating in the ocean for several hours after their cray boat Yoothamurra sank in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Darrel, 69, and Mark, 47, of Claremont, were pulling craypots when the boat sank near Low Rocky Point.

The men's bodies were found floating with other debris by fellow rock lobster fishers just after 7am.

Police said the Yoothamurra had sunk, making it difficult to determine exactly what caused the tragedy.

No emergency beacon was activated, making it likely that there was a problem with the 13.73m vessel.

It was built in 1978 and was a regular sight at Hobart's Victoria Docks, where it was based.

The bodies were flown to Hobart yesterday afternoon.

The men's grieving family last night said they were too distressed to speak about the incident.

POLICE divers have uncovered structural damage caused to the fishing vessel that sank off Tasmania's remote southwest coast on Tuesday, killing a Hobart father and son.

The police vessel Van Diemen arrived at the site where the Yoothamurra sank early yesterday just off Low Rocky Point.

The Van Dieman had divers and specialist equipment onboard, including underwater video and stills cameras.

The bodies of Darrel and Mark Howells were found floating in the water.

Mystery surrounded how the vessel sank given no emergency beacon or distress call was received.

Divers today located a wreck that was later confirmed as the Yoothamurra.

It was in 20 metres of water about 500m from the shore and where the bodies were found.

Police divers said debris and fishing equipment was visible on the surface as was the life raft.

The raft was still attached to the vessel and appeared to have released automatically after it sunk.

Insp Brian Edmonds said underwater photographs were taken and other evidence was gathered.

"All evidence will be provided to the coroner who will investigate the circumstances with a view to determining causes for the vessel sinking and the tragic loss of two lives of the well-respected fishermen," he said.

It is believed to have been the first fatality to have occurred in the rock lobster industry for almost a decade
