A MAN has died after the car he was driving and a truck collided on the Bass Highway at Parramatta Creek yesterday.
Police said the accident, reported at 3.40pm, involved a B-double truck and a 2001 silver Subaru Liberty sedan.
The driver of the car died at the scene. He is believed to be a 26-year-old man from Devonport. The 43-year-old truck driver from Shearwater was not hurt.
The road was littered with debris and diesel and was closed for more than three hours. At one stage more than 30 trucks were banked up because of the delay.
Police said priority was given to through traffic bound for Devonport and the Spirit of Tasmania, then to the trucks. Accident Investigation Services attended for several hours.
The crash was not far from the scene of a similar fatal accident in November.
A man died when his sedan and a truck collided in a fiery crash near the Parramatta Creek weighbridge. In March a woman died nearby on the Bass Highway at Elizabeth Town.
And two men were killed on the Bass Highway at Elizabeth Town in June last year.
Yesterday's death takes the road toll to 29, compared with 32 for the same time last year.
An inquest will be opened today. |
