VIOLENT storms which have caused chaos across Tasmania this week have claimed a woman’s life.

The 63-year-old was clearing fallen trees and other storm debris at her Trevallyn property when she was struck by another falling tree just after 12pm.

The woman was freed from underneath the tree by her husband but she could not be saved by paramedics at the scene.

Launceston was being battered by 110km/h winds at the time and emergency services were called out to 130 incidents in the space of just a few hours.

Most related to blown-off rooves and fallen trees.

The Launceston City Council closed the levee gates at 8.30pm to mitigate North Esk flooding, said SES Regional Manager Mhairi Revie.

“Closing the gates is a precautionary measure to ensure that people in low lying areas on the North Esk flood plain don’t experience residential flooding,’’ Ms Revie said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for wind gusts of up to 130 km/h forecast for the South East forecast district and southern parts of the Western and East Coast forecast districts for a period overnight. Wind speeds of this magnitude are expected to cause more disruption to electricity customers.
