A SMALL earthquake rattled part of state's east overnight.
Geoscience Australia said a short tremor of a 3.4 magnitude was recorded midway between Swansea and Ross around 12.30am.

Duty seismologist Robbie Morris said the tremor had been detected by sensors locally and on the mainland.
"It would be noticeable but not likely to cause any damage," he said.
"Particularly being in the middle of the night a lot of people might not feel it. You'd have a shaking, maybe teacups rattling, you wouldn't expect anything to fall of the shelves and there would be no expected structural damage to anything."
He said such incidents were uncommon but not unheard of in the area, with a quake of magnitude 2.0 near Coles Bay in 1998, of 2.8 near Swansea in 1999, and near Lake Sorell in 2002.
This quake was felt by people as far away as Kingston, 90km from the epicentre.
"It's an earthquake that happens in the middle of the plate, all Australian quakes occur like that," he said.
"The whole plate is moving north and it's generally stress relief due to those movements. It's about seven to eight centimetres north a year Australia is moving, causing large quakes up around Indonesia, so a release of stress will happen elsewhere throughout the plate." |
