SOME pieces of art are far too good to be kept in someone's back yard.

Gifted amateur sculptor James Hanslow, of Cambridge, used simple welding equipment and scrap metal to build this one-tonne T-Rex dinosaur skeleton. It is six metres long and 1.7 metres high.

The piece started out as a humble garden sculpture, but turned into a monster.

"When I started I was actually making a fish and I stuck a head on it and my son said it looked more like a dinosaur," Mr Hanslow said.

He hopes someone will buy the dinosaur to put on public display.

Over three months Mr Hanslow, 47, spent his spare time after work and on weekends crafting the scrap metal masterpiece, which is modelled on pictures of dinosaurs sourced from the internet.

He used bits of iron from the old Cambridge railway, old farm equipment and machinery.

The tail spines are the tines from plough ribs and the tail piece includes spokes from an old wheel.

"Mr Hanslow has been making art from scrap metal and timber for about three years but the dinosaur is by far the largest piece he has made. His wife Teena said she admired her husband's ability to turn trash into treasure.

Mr Hanslow recently had his first sculpture exhibition at the nearby Meadowbank Estate.
