Water bills to hit cities

HOBART and Glenorchy ratepayers will finally get their controversial water and sewerage bills from next week.
Southern Water acting chief executive officer Russell Fox said yesterday Clarence, Kingborough, Huon Valley and Tasman households would follow, with all bills expected to be in ratepayers' hands this month.
The long-awaited delivery of the accounts coincides with a Hobart City Council campaign taking a swipe at the State Government's $90,000 advertising blitz last week.
The council has today paid for a half-page advertisement claiming to give ratepayers the "real facts" about the unpopular reforms.
It also urges householders to phone the State Government to complain, not councils, and asks local politicians "why these reforms are costing you so much money".
Mr Fox said a staged approach to mailing the bills was planned but it would be business as usual from next year.
A number of homeowners have contacted the Mercury about not receiving their water bills yet.
"For 2009 the first accounts have been rolled out progressively to ensure the accuracy of information sent to customers," Mr Fox said.
"We acknowledge there was a delay in accounts being sent whilst the concession issues were resolved, as account information was transferred to Southern Water and as accounts are checked for accuracy."
So far only Sorell, Brighton, Central Highlands, Derwent Valley, Glamorgan-Spring Bay and Southern Midlands have received accounts.
It comes with the finalisation of where the money will be spent.
Mr Fox said $41.8 million would be spent by Southern Water this financial year, including $6.1 million on the South East Tasmania recycled water scheme, $3.2 million on the Swansea water scheme dam and $2.9 million on stage one of the Lauderdale sewerage system.
Southern Water is the 12th largest water industry business in Australia with responsibility for maintaining almost 3000kms of mains and more than 38 water and 32 level-two wastewater treatment plants.
Anyone with billing concerns can call Southern Water on 136992.
