AUSTRALIANS may soon be making mobile phone calls and sending text messages while flying on domestic aircraft.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority released a discussion paper today detailing plans for in-flight mobile phone use.
This follows a successful trial in 2007 of mobile SMS and data use on a Qantas domestic aircraft.
Surveys completed during the trial indicate passengers are interested in using their mobile phones for mid-flight communication.
Plane passengers are currently prohibited from using non flight-mode mobiles for fear signals may interfere with flight navigation systems.
Under the proposal, the use of mobiles while flying would be possible through pico cell technology, which allows phones to receive signals without compromising safety.
A Qantas spokeswoman said today the airline was considering all mobile communications, including voice calls, but would not make a decision until the ACMA process was finalised.
Overseas operators including Ryanair and Emirates already allow in-flight calls.
